It has been announced that Tempo is increasing its ownership of Barkan Wine Cellars to 83%. Major shareholders Shmuel Boxer, Yair Lerner and Zivit Shapir have indicated they have decided to exercise their option to sell their shares to Tempo Beer Industries Ltd.

Barkan Winery was founded in 1990 by Shmuel Boxer and Yair Lerner. It originally operated out of the Barkan Industrial Estate, close to Ariel. Apart from making wine, Barkan also maintained the rights to produce Stock Brandy and Keglevich Vodka in Israel. In 1994 the company went public and issued 25% of its shares. In 2001 Barkan bought Segal Wines, a small, family winery. Barkan recently completed the move to a brand new winery at Hulda, not far from Rehovot, which is situated alongside a 120 hectare vineyard, the largest in the country.

Both Barkan & Segal make their wines at Barkan’s Hulda facility but they are marketed separately. Barkan’s main labels are: Superieur, Altitude, Reserve, Classic and Domaine. Segal’s are: Unfiltered, Rehasim, Marom Galil, Ben Ami and Shel Segal. The chief winemaker for Barkan is Ed Salzberg, who has in the past worked for Carmel, Tishbi and Binyamina wineries before joining Barkan. Segal’s winemaker is Avi Feldstein, who came with the Segal purchase. In 2007 Barkan & Segal harvested 7,000 tons of grapes. It is Israel’s second largest winery.

Tempo Beer Industries, is Israel’s second largest beverage company & largest brewer. It is based at Netanya and produces Goldstar, Maccabee and Nesher beers and distributes Heineken, who have a share in the company. They also represent and bottle Pepsi Cola in Israel. In 2005 Tempo entered the wine business by purchasing 39% of Barkan Wine Cellars. Shmuel Boxer and Yair Lerner remained joint managing directors of the winery.

The largest winery in Israel is Carmel Winery, founded in 1882 by the Rothschild family. The largest beverage company is the Central Bottling Company, aka Coca Cola Israel. They own, produce or import to Israel many famous international brands including: Carlsberg, Guinness , Johnnie Walker , Smirnoff and Coca Cola. They recently entered the Israeli wine market by purchasing Tabor Winery, through their subsidiary, IBBLS.

It remains to be seen what effect, if any, this news will have on the day to day management of Barkan Winery.
