?A new dictionary has been launched which provides wine terms in Hebrew. The creators of this dictionary were a committee of wine professionals along with The Academy for the Hebrew Language. Anything to do with wine from the vine in the vineyard to the restaurant or bar, now has a authentic Hebrew word to describe it.
The committee used the rich resource of the Bible and Talmud, along with modern Hebrew to come up with their proposed words. Wine has such deep roots both in Israel and the subject is frequently covered in the ancient sources. The research was both fascinating and enlightening.
The result of their work is that words like aroma, aperitif, blend, decanter, sommelier and terroir now have their Hebrew equivalents. The President of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, Professor Moshe Bar-Asher was proud to introduce the stylishly presented booklet at a special reception hosted by The French Ambassador to Israel. Many of the country?s leading wine journalists, wine professionals and professors from the world of academia were present.
