Amphorae Vineyard recently announced that Arkadi Papikian is joining the winery as partner and new winemaker of the winery. Amphorae was founded in 2000. In 2008, the winery was bought by the owners of Keshet Winery, a start up operation in the Galilee that never came to fruition. Amphorae is situated at Makura Farm at Kerem Maharal, just north of Fureidis and Zichron Ya?acov.
Arkadi Papikian is a winemaker who initially worked for Carmel Mizrahi at Rishon Le Zion in the early 1990?s. After a period of time as winemaker of Dalton Winery, he became the most sought after wine consultant in Israel. Tulip and Zion are two of the many wineries that he advises.
It was also announced that Amphorae will be seeking the services of Michel Rolland as winemaking consultant. Bordeaux based Michel Rolland is the most famous winemaking consultant in the world and it will be the first time he consults an Israeli winery.
Perhaps the most effective wine consultant to an Israeli winery was Californian Peter Stern, who worked with the Golan Heights Winery, for twenty years. There he helped create the Israel quality revolution. He then moved to Carmel and assisted with their change to quality wines.
Prominent wine consultants involved in Israeli wine today include: Australian John Worontshack, a flying winemaker who lives in England, has been involved with Dalton Winery since the beginning. Zelma Long, a Californian icon, is the current consultant to the Golan Heights Winery. Bordeaux based Marc Dworkin advises Binyamina Winery.
