A press release from Mr. Jacques Bar, Chairman and CEO of Tempo, has announced changes at the top of Barkan Winery.
A new managing director of Barkan has been appointed . He is Gilles Assouline, previously manager of the Tempo production facility and part of the management of the Tempo group. He will replace Shmuel Boxer on 1. 08.2016. Boxer will become Vice Chairman of Barkan Winery, (the Chairman is Amir Bornstein) and will continue to be responsible for export. The sales and marketing of Barkan wines is managed by Tempo.
Shmuel Boxer, from a family of veteran grape growers and founders of Ness Ziona, established Barkan Winery on the Barkan Industrial Estate near Ariel in 1990. From there he has built Barkan to become the largest winery in Israel and the largest exporter of Israeli wine. He built a brand new facility at Hulda (near Rehovot), alongside the largest vineyard in Israel, and a grand new visitors center. He also purchased Segal Wines. He engineered the takeover by Tempo, and continued to manage the winery, going from strength to strength.
Tempo is the largest brewery in Israel and the second largest drinks company. It is situated in Netanya. The products they own or represent include Goldstar & Heineken; Absolut, Chivas Regal & Jameson; Pepsi Cola, Seven Up & San Pellegrino, as well as Barkan & Segal Wines.
The chief winemaker of Barkan is Ed Salzberg. The main Barkan labels are Superieur, Altitude, Assemblage, Special Reserve, Reserve and Classic. Segal is marketed as a separate brand. The main Segal labels are Unfiltered, Rechasim, Marom Galil, Ben Ami and Shel Segal.
