MONTEFIORE RED 2015 has been chosen as one of the BEST OF 2016 from Israel & Lebanon in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. An exclusive list of only six wines was compiled by Mark Squires and only three made the list of VALUE WINES, which featured the Montefiore wine. Mark Squires wrote: “This lighter summer red is fresh, exuberant and well-structured for the price level. I liked it a lot.” The Montefiore Red is an unoaked blend of Petite Sirah, Shiraz and Malbec, from Judean Hills vineyards.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate is the publication of the world's most famous and influential wine critic. Mark Squires is part of Robert Parker’s tasting team and the specialist on Israeli wines.
Montefiore Winery is a start-up winery founded in 2010 and the first wines were released in 2013. The winery celebrates Sir Moses Montefiore, a wine lover and a legendary figure in Jewish and Israeli history, who was the first person to recommend that Jews should return to agriculture and plant vines. He was also the founder of the cornerstone of modern Jerusalem.
The winery is owned by Arnon Geva, co-founder of Castel, and Rachel & David Montefiore. Geva is CEO and Adam Montefiore, father of Rachel & David, is chairman. They are the fifth and 6th generation after Sir Moses Montefiore, and the first members of the Montefiore family to live in Israel. The winemaking consultant is Sam Soroka, one of Israel’s most experienced winemakers. The winery produces 75,000 bottles a year and fifty percent of this goes in exports to twelve countries.
In August 2016, the Montefiore Petite Sirah 2013 was awarded 91 points in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, Montefiore Kerem Moshe 2013 scored 90 points and Montefiore Aria Reserve 2013 also scored 90. Mark Squires then wrote: “..special kudos to Montefiore. They are generating the most excitement in my book. They keep getting better and better.”
Montefiore wines are marketed in Israel by Handcrafted Wines of Israel, owned by Oded Shoham. Royal Wine represents them in the USA and Kedem Europe in the UK.
