An exciting new winery has come to the fore. This is Domaine Seror, which was pouring wine at the recent Sommelier Exhibition in Tel Aviv and was immediately noticeable because of the very stylish logo and labels. Those who took time to taste the wines were also struck by the depth, complexity and potential.
Domaine Seror is the fulfillment of a dream of Claude Seror along with three French friends, who combined their expertise in wine with their passion for Israel and love of Eretz Israel, ‘The Land of Israel’. Their meeting with Yuval Matzliach, an experienced farmer, man of the soil and dedicated wine grower, led to the creation of a quality driven winery at Moshav Avnei Eitan, on the southern Golan Heights.
Matzliach’s vineyard was planted in 2010. It is located east of Avnei Eitan on the volcanic soil of the Golan Heights at an elevation of 400 meters above sea level. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are grown there, and they source Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Grenache from nearby. Yuval, the grower, works in perfect synergy with the winemaking team to produce award winning wines from the fruit grown on the Golan Heights.
The winemaker is Itay Lahat, one of the most talented and experienced winemakers in Israel today. He used to work with Israel’s largest winery, but since he left, he has become Israel’s leading consultant winemaker. He is in great demand and has experience of all the wine regions of Israel, but he so believes in the quality of Domaine Seror that he has made an exception and insists in being the winemaker there. He makes wines with elegance and restraint which express the character of the terroir.
The wines combine the wine culture of France, the advanced technology of Israel and the terroir of Israel’s finest wine growing region. The flagship wines are a varietal Syrah and a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The regular label, (a red, white and rosé), represent excellent quality and great value. The labels carry the signature of Claude Seror and the logo shows his initials, C S.
Possibly the three most interesting wines are the L’Or Rosé, Claude Seror Rouge and the Syrah and they also produce high quality olive oil. L’Or Rosé is a classic rosé clearly in the French style. Pale with an onion skin color, it has a delicate berry aroma, is bone dry and has a pronounced, refreshing acidity. The Claude Seror Rouge, with a white label, is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The wine has rich and broad fruit aromas, a satisfying mouth filling flavor and a long, well balanced finish. Finally the prestige Syrah, (black label,) is one of the best in Israel. Showing excellent fruit, it is chewy, spicy and meaty and yet shows an elegance and complexity. The hidden jewel is the fantastic Oliko, an Extra Virgin Olive Oil produced from Matzliach’s olive groves. The Picholine is outstanding.
Domaine Seror has quality and great potential. Wines-israel will be watching the winery closely in the future. It is certainly ‘one to follow’
