The new edition of The World Atlas of Wine has been launched in the UK and USA. The book is a wine classic, first written by Hugh Johnson, doyen of the world’s wine writers, 48 years ago! The first edition was published in 1971. This is the 8th edition and the book is now a partnership between Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson MW, arguably the world’s most famous wine critic today. For the first time, the Israel entry merits a full page.
The launch in America was divided between Washington DC and New York City. At both of these two very prestigious events, two Israeli wines were served. This was a considerable achievement for Israeli wine and of course a particular honor for the wineries chosen. The Israeli wineries meriting this focus were from the consortium, the Judean Hills Quartet: Domaine du Castel, Flam Winery, Tzora Vineyards and Sphera Winery. Respectively Eli Ben Zaken (Castel), Golan Flam (Flam), Eran Pick MW (Tzora) and Doron Rav Hon (Sphera) deserve immense credit for this recognition.
The wines poured were as follows:
Sphera White Concepts First Page 2018
Flam Classico 2017
New York City
Tzora Judean Hills Blanc 2018
Castel Grand Vin 2016
Each of these wines are from the Judean Hills wine region, on the slopes that rise towards Jerusalem.
The World Atlas of Wines is a must for the library of both wine professionals and wine lovers. It is published by Mitchell Beazley – Octopus Publishing and retails for ₤50 in the UK.
