Nir Gal has been appointed the new Deputy CEO of Barkan Winery. Gal is 41 years old, married with three children. He has worked at Tempo Beverages for a number of years, being responsible for beer and spirits. Previously, he was responsible for marketing Barkan wine. He will report to Amir Borenstein, the chairman.
Barkan was founded by Shmuel Boxer and partners in 1990. He is now the Mayor of Ness Ziona. Barkan Winery is situated at Hulda, (not far from Rehovot), alongside the largest vineyard in Israel. Over the years the winery has grown to become the largest winery in Israel and one of the two largest exporters. The winery markets two brands separately. One is Barkan, the other is Segal, a brand the purchased from the Segal family in 2000/1. The Barkan Classic label and Segal’s Wine are two of the largest selling wine brands in Israel. The winemaker is Ido Lewinsohn, who made his name at Recanati Winery & Lewinsohn Winery.
In 2005 the winery went into partnership with Tempo Beverages, the second largest total beverage company in Israel. Based in Netanya, it is Israel’s largest brewery producing Goldstar and Maccabee, but Tempo also represents and markets global brands like Heineken, Chivas Regal, Pepsi Cola and Perrier. In 2008 the acquisition was completed.
Whilst succeeding in sales in volume based markets, Barkan-Segal has always struggled in markets where image is more important. There has been confusion between the proliferation of labels and an overlapping of Barkan and Segal wines, makes understanding the logic between the two brands even more difficult. It is therefore a wise decision to choose someone who has worked in with wine previously. In the meantime, the potential of the company has been shown in a series of new labels like Barkan Beta, Segal Free Run and Segal Whole Cluster, which have been made since Lewinsohn became winemaker. Wines-israel wishes Nir Gal every success in the future.
