Golan Heights, Barkan and Shor family win most golds more »

The Best Value Competition is the most important in Israel for discovering the wines which are best value for money. It is for wines which cost less than 79 shekels shelf price (approx. US $21.) This is the twelfth consecutive year of this competition. 151 wines were submitted. Tastings were conducted blind by 20 judges including sommeliers and winemakers. The judges sat two meters apart according to the instructions (as they were then,) due to the Coronavirus.The competition was organized by Studio Ben Ami, which also organizes the annual Eshkol Hazahav Competition and the Sommelier Trade Exhibition.

The outstanding wineries were the Golan Heights Winery with four Gold Medals and Barkan Winery with three Gold Medals. The Golan Heights Winery was the winery which bought about the quality revolution in Israel. Barkan Winery is Israel’s largest winery. Both Golan and Barkan are Israel’s largest exporters.

The Shor family also won three Gold Medals, though they were divided amongst three separate wineries: 1848 Winery, Hayotzer Winery and Shorr (sic) Estate Winery. The family won 7 medals in all. The Shor family founded their winery in 1848 in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was Israel’s first winery long before Rothschild founded Carmel Winery. Many generations, and 172 years later, the family is still making wine.

So it was a competition were Israel’s largest winery, pioneering winery and first wine family, were the most successful.
