The Israel Wine Experience? is a new initiative run by a dedicated group of Israeli wine professionals, who have decided to provide the ultimate service to the wine loving tourist or to those simply curious about Israeli wine.
They provide TOURS, TASTINGS or LECTURES to tourists both from abroad and from within Israeli. The lecturers and guides are some of the leading wine personalities in Israel today and all of them have had wine experience in Israel and overseas. More important they are fluent in English, Russian, and Hebrew, usually being immigrants from English and Russian speaking countries.
The Israel Wine Experience offers the opportunity to visit or experience Israel through the prism of its wine industry. Tours may be arranged to visit wineries, hike through the vineyards, to see a particular wine region or to meet winemakers.
Tastings may be tailored to suit any need, but two things may be guaranteed. The wines will be world or international class and the variety will be enormous. Each tasting will be led by a specialist wine educator and the venue chosen will always be the choice of the customer.
Any tasting may be preceded by a lecture to give an introduction to the world of Israeli wines. This will include Israel?s ancient and modern wine history, with special emphasis on the recent quality wine revolution that has taken place in Israel. All these activities may geared to the professional or to the interested amateur. Even those looking for something light and not too serious, like a fun interlude to a separate program, may be catered for.
This new initiative is headed up by Oded Shoham. He was born in Israel, followed his parents at the age of 5 to the U.S.A and then made aliyah (immigrated) to Israel. Since then his main mission has been advancing Israeli wines.
He began in the vineyard and winery. First he was vineyard manager of Tzora Winery and then set up the marketing of Israel?s first kibbutz, boutique winery. His next job was managing one of the top wine shops in the country, selling the full range of Israeli wines.
He followed this by being import manager for Barkan-Segal, Israel?s second largest winery, one of the leading import companies. Here he dealt with some of the world’s leading wineries.
After this he was appointed export director for Carmel, the historic winery of Israel. During this time he managed a consortium of prestige boutique wineries which were known as ?Handcrafted Wines of Israel?, which was the first time Israeli wineries worked together to advance exports. He then returned to work in the Israeli market and managed Carmel’s specialist restaurant division.
Therefore he knows import/ export/ specialist retail/ supermarkets and top restaurants ? all from the inside. He has worked for wineries large and small and is wine knowledgeable of all aspects of Israeli wine from the vineyard to the glass. There is arguably no single Israeli with a broader knowledge of the local wine scene.
So far there have been a wide range of individuals and groups that have made use of the Israel Wine Experience?s services. Compliments range from ?very educational? and ?great fun? to even ?memorable? and ?I am going to recommend it to my friends back home.?
The numbers of people passing through an ?Israel Wine Experience? have varied. Some of the participants have been part of large organized groups with formal programs, others have belonged to smaller, more intimate groups. They have catered for families, wine lovers, connoisseurs and even wine professionals.
