Recanati Winery is located in Emek Hefer (the Hefer Valley) in a building resembling a Spanish homestead. The winery facility includes temperature controlled stainless steel fermentation and storage tanks, a temperature and humidity controlled barrel room, a bottling and packaging facility, the winery store and a well-appointed private tasting room, imbued with warmth by its heavy wooden furniture and carpets.
The relatively new commercial boutique winery is the fulfillment of a dream. Businessman and wine enthusiast Lenny Recanati remembers wine being prepared in his parents? home. His entry into the world of wine, however, occurred when he received a gift of a wine course 15 years ago. Uri Shaked, owner of Shaked Ltd., distributors of imported and local wines and spirits, is a partner in the winery.
Visitors to the winery are exposed to the secrets of winemaking, from the crushing and pressing of grapes to tasting the finished wines or even barrel and tank samples.
Grapes received at the winery are treated with the utmost care. They are manually harvested, transported in 400 kilogram bins, then crushed, cooled, and transferred to the winery?s fermentation tanks (for red wine processing) or loaded directly to the winery’s pneumatic press in the case of white wines. The sophisticated, state-of-the-art bottling system is programmed to handle more than ten thousand bottles daily with virtually no oxygen pickup in the bottling process. In the large barrel room, cold temperatures and clouds of mist often conceal the hundred of barrels arranged in tiers up to the ceiling. The thermometer reads 12-14?C and the humidity is relatively high, around 85%. The wine ages in a variety of French, Hungarian, and American oak barrels, produced by some of the finest coopers working in Europe and America.
The winery’s grapes come predominantly from kibbutz Manara and the Ben Zimra region in the Upper Galilee. These vineyards are located on slopes, plateaus, and high elevation wadi (valleys) at elevations from 700 – 800m, at a distance of 20 – 30 km from the Mediterranean Sea. The luscious fruit is enhanced by cool night breezes that supplement the plentiful summer sunshine, and by rocky soils with excellent drainage and limestone sub-soils.
The winery’s founding head winemaker was Lewis Pasco, an accomplished chef who began his career in the culinary world. His desire to immigrate to Israel to find fulfilling work and a Jewish wife finally led Pasco to Recanati. ?The opportunity of being involved in a winery from the initial stages of its inception is every winemaker?s dream,? says Pasco.
As of the beginning of 2008, Gil Shatsberg, winemaker until recently at Amphorae Vineyards, will replace Lewis as the chief winemaker of Recanati Winery. Gil, who studied at UC Davis, then worked with Jordan in California before returning to Israel to work for Carmel before taking up his position at Amphorae as Head winemaker for the last 7 Years.
Yasmin ? Red and White ? Light, fresh wines suitable for any occasion and any time. These are dry fruity wines suitable for beginners and everyday consumption.
Recanati ? This is the winery?s main label consisting of quality varietal wines of exceptional value. This series includes Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Barbera, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
Reserve ? These wines are made from the winery’s best vineyard blocks. The wines are aged for extended periods in oak barrels and are characterized by intense and complex flavors. These include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah-Zinfandel, and Chardonnay.
Special Reserve ? The ?baby? of winemaker Lewis Pasco, who believes that producing good wine involves coupling top quality grapes with top-of-the-range oak barrels, meticulous attention to every detail and an enormous amount of love and patience. The result is a harmonious, full-bodied wine with long-term bottle aging potential.
The belief that Israeli wines can and should serve as ambassadors for Israel abroad, just as US and Australian wines have conquered the global market, was behind Recanti’s decision to export their wines to three different continents. Recanati wines are distributed in the United States, Japan and Europe, where they have been very successful ? and not only among kosher consumers.
The winery?s Visitors Center was designed as a meeting place for wine lovers interested in winemaking, who enjoy drinking quality wines and who want to meet the winemakers in order to learn more. The facility offers guided tours of the winery and the barrel room, wine tasting and the option of purchasing Recanati wines and wine accessories, such as decanters, designer bottle openers, etc.
The winery is situated in the Emek Hefer Industrial Zone, on the old Tel Aviv-Haifa road (No.4) between Kfar Haroeh junction and the entrance to Hadera.
